In the near future, when conventional social systems are crumbling, a somewhat eccentric genius releases to the public his pride and joy, a sophisticated virtual world that people can disappear into. Called the OASIS, this VR-based realm is full of ‘real world’ references – from comic characters to movie icons, and then some – that stem from their late creator’s cultural 1 exposure from the 1970s onwards. A less-than- well-off Wade Watts, who goes by Parzival in the OASIS, is one of the countless people who roam around the digital world on a daily basis, after one thing: an Easter egg which unlocks ownership rights to the OASIS. A Gunter (egg- hunter) must obtain three keys by completing various quests, which he duly attempts with friends and fellow players Aech, Art3mis, Daito and Sho. With a power-hungry corporation that has its own army of Gunters in the picture, the road to success is anything but easy.
