After the dragon Smaug leaves the Lonely Mountain, he swoops down on the nearby Lake Town and burns it to the ground, forcing its inhabitants to flee to the ruins of Dale. Meanwhile, Bilbo tries to help dwarf King Thorin Oakenshield as he is seized by gold madness after reclaiming the vast treasure Smaug was guarding. All this while legions of orcs, sent by Sauron, march towards the mountain to wage a war against humans, elves and dwarves alike. The outcome of the battle will decide the very fate of Middle-earth.
