Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello is living in 1970s California, making his way as a drug-addicted private eye, when his work is shaken up by a visit from an ex-girlfriend, Shasta Fay Hempworth. She belives that her billioniare boyfriend is the target of an abduction by his wife and her secret lover. The case appears complicated enough with more variables present than Doc can wrap his head around even while sober. Things soon get even worse for the happy-go-lucky detective, however. After agreeing to take the case on, Sportello is in over his head when Shasta turns up dead and his own life is suddenly in danger.
