Recently widowed Korean war veteran and retired car mechanic Walt Kowalski is a bittered old man that lives for one thing only – his prized 1972 Gran Torino. Much to his disgust, the neighbourhood he lives in has gone through a myriad of changes, from all-white to racially mixed and when a Hmong family moves in next door, he wants nothing to do with them. After one of the gangbanger teenage sons, Thao, tries to steal his car he almost kills him, but as time passes Walt warms up to the youngster and decides to take him under his wing to put him on the straight and narrow. So begins an unlikely relationship that changes both individuals at the core.
